Greta is a wonderful mare with a great
temperament.   Can you believe that
this full figured young mare was going
to end up on someone's dinner
plate....and I don't mean K-9 dinner.
She represents many of the horses that
go through the kill pen.  Sound, sane,
and under 10 years old.  The way they
slaughter these animals is inhumane.
Horses are not like cattle.  They are
fight or flight animals.  The floors in the
slaughter house are wet with the blood
of other horses and slippery so when
they enter those boxes, they go into
panic mode.  It is very hard for the
person operating the captive bolt gun
to hit a moving target so often times,
the horse is not killed instantly.  They
suffer.  The fate in Mexico is far worse.
They stab them in the back until the
spinal cord is severed, then render
them up, alive, but paralyzed.
There are way too many horses being
bred.  Although foals are cute, many
people with mares breed just to see a
foal born.  Some don't think of the
consequences.  A horse is a very
expensive pet.  With this economy,
horses are being starved, neglected
and dropped off at slaughter houses
because the owner can't care for them
anymore.  Many have tried to sell, give
away or donate to a rescue, but many
rescues are full.  So many,
unknowingly, run their horses through
auction and hope they are going to a
good home.  This not the case, so
many times.  Please, stop breeding for
just a year.  If your horse is not a
quality animal with excellent
confirmation, please, reconsider
breeding him or her.  Think about that
animal going to slaughter.  Watch some
of the many horse slaughter videos out
there.  It's very sad.
I have 6 horses of my own.  I know they
are an expensive hobby to keep.
Help rescues if you can.
Meet Greta.  She is a 5 year old Haflinger/Belgian mare that was rescued
from the kill pen.  This full figured girl was slaughter bound when a
rescue group called AC4H (Another Chance 4 Horses) notified NEER
(New England Equine Rescues) that she was due to be sent to slaughter.
It was thought she may be in foal, so she was given very little time to find
a home until funds were raised to post Greta's "bail".  The broker didn't
want to sell her to the slaughter house pregnant because he would get
"docked" money for a pregnant mare.  Joke's on them, huh, Greta...she's
just a full figured girl...and who says being fat is bad for your health...way
to prove them wrong, Greta!!
I had the pleasure to be with this mare for 6 months.  I was her foster
mom until a new adoptive home could be found.  Greta now resides with
Ella Thomas of Salisbury, NH.   Ella sent Greta to Spirited Horses Ranch
in Halldale, ME with my friend and horse trainer, Kamrie Hodgeman.
Kamrie worked wonders with this girl.  She is a wonderfully broke trail
horse...and in only 30 days!!  Kamrie specializes in starting and training
problem horses.  Check out her website @
